Storm Front

Storm Front - Jim Butcher I need to get into a new series like I need a hole in my head. Still, I would love to have something with lots of books that I can turn to for comfort and fun. The Dresden Files offers that promise. At the heart of a good series is a character that you really want to spend time with. Harry is a bit of an ass, but he is also self deprecating about his flaws. Harry has magical powers that we slowly learn about, along with many other paranormal rules of the road in this otherwise normal Chicago setting.

About the audiobook... Everyone has gone gah over the narrator James Marsters. I'm the dork who has no idea who James Marsters is. Yes, whole swaths of popular culture have flown right passed me. Thanks to Otila, I have seen the gifs. Thanks to google, I know he's that hot platinum blonde British accented vampire on TV. I am sure he was terrific on Buffy. As an audiobook narrator, he was ok. He has a great voice, but IMHO, he did not differentiate characters well or consistently. He also a bit breathy at times when breathy didn't really seem to fit. Since this is the first of many Harry Dresden books, and I think he narrates most of them, I am willing to chalk this up to learning curve.

Bottom line, I am in like, not love. Still, I know that relationships take a while to grow and I am totally willing to give at least another book a go. It may actually be 2-3 books since some people said that book 4 is when things really start clicking.
